Getting Started

So what's this Known World Mapping Project I speak of?  Well, it started out as just me messing around with mapping software and a new mapping service last April (2013).  In my mundane life, I work in IT and with a geographic information system (GIS).  I thought it would be fun to map the East Kingdom and publish the map on the web.  It was a bit of work, but I did it.  The results can be found here: http://bit.ly/10KOp80.

In the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), I enjoy researching and brewing historical ales and beers.  I blogged about the mapping project here and here.

Then at the end of June, Dutchess Gilyan Alienora of Clonmacnoise (Ansteorra) contacted me about my map.  Mundanely, she is also a GIS professional.  She saw my work on ArcGIS Online and asked if I'd like to work on a project mapping the Known World of the SCA.  I'm told this is something the Board of Directors (BoD) is interested in. Three others joined the project between June and July and the project was made official by the BoD at their August meeting.

By mid-September, we've decided who is mapping which kingdoms.

  • Gilyan: Ansteorra, An Tir, Middle, Outlands
  • Brehon: Artemisia, Northshield
  • Rhianwen: Atenveldt, Caid, Calontir, Ealdormere, Lochac, West
  • Guy: Drachenwald
  • Otto: Aethelmearc, Atlantia, East, Meridies, Trimaris

I'm not sure who is covering Gleann Abhann, but it will be.

Dutches Gilyan provided a spreadsheet of ZIP codes each Kingdom has (9/17/13).  Some lists are certainly better than others.  They will need to be cleaned-up and verified before we can start mapping them.  It should be noted that ZIP codes are not universal, nor are they a particularly good classification tool.

Between September and October, my local SCA branch has had three events.  I am currently serving as the Seneschal (branch president) of the Barony of Endewearde.  We had the Fort Knox Demo, our first Baronial investiture, and The Endewearde Hunt.  Needless to say, I've been a bit busy helping our event stewards coordinate all the fun.

Here we are, the day after The Hunt and I'm anxious to get started with this project.  I needed to create a new account on ArcGIS Online, separate from my work or East Kingdom project accounts.  In order to do so, I needed another email account to associate it with.  At the same time, I figured it would be a good time to give Google+ a try and blog about my mapping experience.  I'm sure this is the start of a long road and I might as well create a venue to vent, I mean share my progress.  ;-)  Here we go....
